2009-2010 Ice Dance: Part Four

2009-2010 Season In Review: Part 16 of 16
Ice Dance: Part 4 of 4

Isabelle Delobel/Olivier Schoenfelder. Current World Ranking: not ranked
Compulsory Dance
We tried to make witty comments about the little triangle pendant on Delobel's dress, but we were tripped up by the fact that we genuinely can't tell what it is or what it's doing there. Is it a crotch shield? Anyway, we're not crazy about the pinstripes either. Bee thinks they look a little too mob boss and Elle thinks they should have gone with solid black since Delobel's wearing black.

Original Dance: French Waltz: La Complainte de la butte / French Cancan: Gaite Parisienne  by Jacques Offenbach
Before this dance, we had no idea that Delobel and Schoenfelder met one fateful day when Oliver Twist visited the Moulin Rouge.

Free Dance: La Quete by Jacques Brei
Elle thinks these are fine, but Bee loves them. She thinks they're a great example of how to add sparkles in bulk. Our only real complaint is not the fault of either Delobel, Schoenfelder or their costumer, and that's that we just wish Delobel could have worn black skates. They would have matched so much better.

Tanith Belbin/Ben Agosto. Current World Ranking: #4
[top: Cup of China, middle: U.S. Championships, bottom: Olympics]
Compulsory Dance
We are absolutely in love with the costumes Belbin and Agosto wore to Nationals. The Olympics version has sparkles and the Cup of China version has a lovely neckline, but the Nationals version is a stunning color and cut. The Olympics version of Tanith's dress does that thing that's popular among costumes for ballroom dance where it looks like she's wearing two different dresses, depending on which way she turns.

Original Dance: Moldavian Folk Dance: Moldovaneska
These costumes are cute and culturally appropriate! We both had dresses like Tanith's when we were little, something that makes us fond of these in a nostalgic way. Still, these are really cute in both variations.

[Skate America]
 [Cup of China]
[U.S. Championships]
Free Dance: Ave Maria / Amen by G. Rossini
We're really going to miss Belbin and Agosto now that they're retired. We'll miss their skating and the fact Tanith's mom made her costumes and even Ben's glittery chest. Meryl and Charlie are really going to have to pick up some slack on the rhinestoning next season.

Oksana Domnina/Maxim Shabalin. Current World Ranking: #6
Compulsory Dance
We really don't like this dress on Domnina. It just looks bulky. Bee thinks she looks like an 80s office worker. We spent more time talking about Shabalin's hair than Domnina's costume though. Settle our argument for us! Shabalin's ponytail: in or out. (Bee says IN, Elle says OUT.)

Original Dance: Aboriginal Dance arr. by Alexander Goldstin
There's no point commenting on the aesthetic value of these costumes because they're so stunningly offensive. Everything that can be said about these has already been said. Racist, ugly, not alright.

Free Dance: The Double Life of Veronique (soundtrack) by Zbigniew Preisner / Requiem of a Dream (soundtrack) by Clint Mansell
Domnina's tights make her leg look like it is cracking open. Even Bee, who loves embellished tights, does not like them. In addition, we request that you take another look at her dress because IT HAS A FACE ON IT. Somehow we missed that until we put this post together.

Tessa Virtue/Scott Moir. Current World Ranking: #3
[top: Skate Canada, middle: Olympics, bottom: World Championships]
Compulsory Dance
Tessa and Scott have the perfect look and feel to their skating to go for the Twilight look that they rocked for most of the season. In fact, the Olympics version of these costumes was Elle's favorite. When they changed their costumes for Worlds, we really liked Tessa's dress, but thought it might be a bit too subtle.

[top: Trophee Eric Bompard, middle: Skate Canada, bottom: World Championships]
Original Dance: Spanish Flamenco: Farrucas by Pepe Romero
Out of all of the Original Dance costumes this season, these were the most normal. The Original Dance theme spawned all sorts of over-the-top ensembles. And these. All of the versions of these costumes are super classy and lovely, but they did flamenco. Over the top would have been fine in this case. Regardless, Bee is absolutely in love with Tessa's dress from Worlds.

[top: Trophee Eric Bompard, second: Skate Canada, third: Canadian Championships, bottom: Olympics]
Free Dance: Symphony No. 5 by Gustav Mahler - arr. by Ryner Stoetzer
Elle found these hopelessly dull, but Bee, always sympathetic to light-colored dresses, was completely in love with the version of this costume that Tessa wore to Nationals.

Meryl Davis/Charlie White. Current World Ranking: #1
[top: Cup of Russia, middle: U.S. Championships, bottom: Olympics]
Compulsory Dance
These are all totally gorgeous. That purple dress from from Nationals is what Meryl Davis should wear every day. To prom. To the mall. To bed.

Original Dance: Indian Folk Dance: Kajra Re by Shankar-Ehseen-Loy / Slislla Ye Chahaat Ka / Dola Re Dola by Sameer, Nusret Badr
The big plus for these outfits (and this dance) is that they were well-researched and culturally sensitive. As a bonus, both skaters look really great. Meryl especially looks amazing. Awesome color. It's lucky for Bee that she loves these costumes just as much as Elle does, because Elle's love for Meryl and Charlie is sort of legendary.

Free Dance: Phantom of the Opera Overture / Music of the Night / Point of No Return by Andrew Lloyd Webber
They really do look like they just skated out of a Disney movie. At first Elle suggested she didn't love the ruffle across Charlie's chest, but then her love for Meryl and Charlie overwhelmed her and she could no longer see anything in this picture except for a general haze of amazingness and attractiveness.

  1. This is just so biased towards North America skaters, it's unbelievable. No, Belbin & Agosto OD outfits are not authentic in any ways, neither is the program. Actually there were only two authentic OD's among top pairs - from Faella & Scalli and Zaretsky's. And Virtue & Moir flamenco choreography, as well as their costumes are as offensive as Russians' OD. And BTW, all of Tessa dresses look like nightwear and she looks way too heavy. Tanith's outfits at OG (as well as Ben's) - in all the dances are disastrous and tasteless, as well as Domnina's and Delobel's and Tessa's are far behind.
