2009-2010 Season in Review: Part 11 of 16
Pairs: Part 3 of 4
Tatiana Volosozhar/Stanislav Morozov. Current World Ranking: #6.
Short Program: Dreams Illusion mixed by DJI
If we have to explain to you why this sucks, you're reading the wrong blog. There, we got that out of the way. Now, the real heart of the issue: do you think they make squeaky noises when they rub together in their lifts? We're still in shock that these costumes exist, although by this point, we probably shouldn't be surprised by anything.

Free Skate: Pearl Harbor (soundtrack) by Hans Zimmer
We're always a bit uncomfortable when skaters are overly literal about matching their costumes to their music, especially when we're a little hesitant about their music choices in the first place. We are, however, ecstatic that they are wearing black and you know, not blue lamé cat suits. (We never thought we'd congratulate someone for not wearing a blue lamé cat suit, but there is a first for everything. Unfortunately.)
Short Program: Requiem For a Dream by Clint Mansell
These are not good. At all. Davison has tiger stripes and it looks like something is eating Dube's stomach, which is bad because there's really not that much to her dress.
Free Skate: The Way We Were by Marvin Hamlisch
Sometimes we really like a costume for the four minutes and thirty seconds we watch it on the ice and then we see it up close and change our minds. That's the story of Jessica Dubé's free skate costume. We both really liked the neckline and the sleeves and the vintage style-cut of this dress when we saw it on the ice. Then we saw photos of it up close. This is absolutely the worst fabric ever for that cut of dress and it fits Dubé very poorly. Davison looks fine, but his pants are a little more baggy than we'd like them to be.
Keauna McLaughlin/Rockne Brubaker. Current World Ranking: #9
Short Program: Unchained Melody by Alex North and Hy Zaret
We love McLaughlin's dress. It's classy, the cut is nice, the color is absolutely perfect and there's not even a hint of illusion mesh. That said, we don't understand why Brubaker's wearing a T-shirt. It's like they're on their way to two different events, or someone misread the dress code on the invitation.
Free Skate: Selections from Slumdog Millionaire by A.R. Rahman
Elle had a lot to say about these costumes. She talked about how much she hates it when pairs use too much of such a strong color, and how terrible the cut of that dress is, and how Brubaker's shirt looks like he sewed his winter scarf to the front so he wouldn't lose it. Bee just took one look at these pictures and said "Never mind, Brubaker can wear a T-shirt if he wants."
Meagan Duhamel/Craig Buntin. Current World Ranking: #12
Short Program: Hotel California by Eagles
These are too ridiculous for us to make fun of, so instead we are going to list things for you to notice while looking at these photos:
1. The back of Buntin's shirt is entirely mesh.
2. The psychedelic paisley print.
3. The psychedelic paisley print paired with what appears to be geometric zebra print.
Free Skate: Selection of music by Pierre Porte
We aren't a big fan of the colors here. The white and light blue is a little too cliché and ice princessy for our tastes, but we're glad she chose not to bedazzle this costume anymore. How it is now, we can deal with it, but with more bedazzling? We'd be very upset. Buntin looks fine here. We like his shirt.
Shen Xue/Zhao Hongbo. Current World Ranking: #8
Short Program: Who Wants to Live Forever by Brian May (Queen) performed by David Garrett
Wow, these costumes. We fought over them so much that it almost turned into an actual fight, instead of a friendly disagreement over figure skating fashion. Let's start with where we agree: Shen's dress. It's gorgeous. We love the color layering on the skirt. Zhao's shirt is what nearly broke our friendship. Here are just a few of the arguments Elle made to try and convince Bee to change her mind about this shirt: "It wouldn't work on everyone, but it works on him. If I saw someone wearing it on the street I'd hate it, but it's tastefully done and interesting and he can pull it off. I like the gray/cream/pink thing and it works awesomely with her dress." Elle appreciates that Shen and Zhao took risks, because with pairs the costumes we don't hate are often totally boring. She thinks that, in this case, the risk paid off. Bee completely refuses to consider it. She doesn't endorse any of the positive comments expressed about Zhao's shirt in this blog, and can't believe Elle could possibly be so wrong. It's safe to say this is the most strongly opposed we've been since starting this blog.
Free Skate: Adagio in G Minor by Tomaso Albinoni performed by Eroica Trio
These costumes were way less controversial for us. We love the colors on both of them, and we like Shen's dress, Bee slightly more than Elle. Elle appreciates that Shen and Zhao's costumes continue to be more interesting than most pairs', and that they found a way to make the costumes work together besides just using the same colors or making the same costume twice. Bee's not usually a fan of matching appliques, but she can get behind them for Shen and Zhao. Honestly, we were just relieved that we were able to discuss our opinions here without yelling at each other.
